A quieter morning unfolded on the individual events front today, with the spotlight instead falling on a packed relay schedule as both Team NI teams battled to punch their tickets to tonight’s finals.
Among the individual heat swims this morning, Ellie McCartney delivered a composed swim in heat 2 of 3, touching the wall in second place within her heat and sixth overall to secure her spot in tonight’s final. Her time of 2:28.18 sets her up for what promises to be a thrilling evening session. McCartney will be joined in the final by Angharad Evans (SCO), fresh off her victory in the 100m Breaststroke. With two home nation swimmers set to compete side by side, expectations are high and the atmosphere in the arena tonight is set to be nothing short of electric.
The Men’s 200m Freestyle, an event some would dub as the blue-ribbon event in the pool, took place this morning with Jack McMillan swimming in the last heat. Swimming alongside Olympic champion and Team GB relay teammate Matthew Richards (WAL), as well as Tom Dean (ENG), McMillan produced a controlled and measured performance. He touched second in his heat behind Richards, which qualifies him fifth overall and a spot confirmed for tonight’s final. With McMillan set to line up alongside the world’s best, this will be a race to watch!
The Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay quartet of Lottie Cullen, Grace Davison, Alana Burns-Atkin and Emily Hughes produced a solid morning swim, clocking 4:14.49 to book their place in tonight’s final. The team finished just behind South Africa in seventh overall, and will be hoping a strong evening performance can lift them further up the standings.
In the Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay heats, Team NI raced alongside Canada in the second of two heats, going in fully aware of the target time required after England, Scotland and Wales had already set the pace in the earlier heat. Paddy Johnston, Adam Bradley, Matthew Hamilton and Jack McMillan rose to the occasion, delivering an impressive swim of 3:41.06 to secure their own place in tonight’s final.
All eyes now turn to this evening, when every heat swimmer returns to the pool for finals, which include Daniel Wiffen, who goes in as the fastest qualifier in the Men’s 1500m Freestyle as he chases a medal.
