City of Derry Swimming Club is currently recruiting for the role of Head Coach.
With a proud tradition of developing swimmers from grassroots through to regional and national level, the Club is looking for an enthusiastic, driven, and experienced coach to lead its coaching team and build on a strong legacy of excellence. Established in 1959, City of Derry ASC has grown into one of the most respected aquatic clubs in Ireland, promoting swimming for all ages and abilities.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Level 2 qualified coach (or above) to lead our competitive swim programme during an ambitious phase of growth. The successful candidate will be responsible not only for delivering high quality coaching but also for integrating performance support services and forging strategic partnerships.
The Club currently delivers programmes across multiple local venues and is working towards a long-term vision that includes the opening of a new 50m pool by 2030.
The successful applicant will be engaged on a contract for services basis, with an expected availability of approximately 20-25 hours per week. The initial contract will be for a duration of one year, with the possibility of renewal. This position is ideally suited for a coach with proven leadership in athlete development, team management and long-term performance planning.
Remuneration will be discussed with shortlisted candidates and will reflect the scope of the role, qualifications held, and relevant experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Club’s coaching programme across all squads, supporting swimmer development from grassroots to national level.
- Deliver a performance-focused training environment aligned with Swim Ireland’s LTAD model and the Club’s Performance Pathway.
- Plan and oversee annual training, competition schedules, and individual athlete development profiles.
- Guide and mentor the coaching team to maintain high standards and promote continuous improvement.
- Integrate sports science, S&C, and holistic land training practices (e.g., yoga, mindfulness) into the programme.
- Identify and support swimmers with competitive potential and manage team selections for competitions.
- Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, coaches, and Club leadership to ensure alignment and progress.
- Foster strong relationships with Swim Ireland, Swim Ulster, local authorities, and other key stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding practices and promote swimmer welfare in collaboration with the Club Children’s Officer.
- Report regularly to the Club Committee and contribute to strategic planning, including the Club’s 5-Year Development Plan.

Qualifications:
Essential:
- Swim Ireland Level 2 Coaching Qualification (or equivalent)
- Swim Ireland-approved Safeguarding Level 1 Certification (or willingness to complete)
- Enhanced Access NI Check (or willingness to apply)
Desirable:
- Swim Ireland Level 3 Coaching Qualification
- First Aid and Child Protection Training
- Familiarity with Swim Ireland’s Club Mark and governance standards
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Essential:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Head or Lead Coach
- Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills
- Proven success in developing competitive swimmers
Desirable:
- Experience managing a coaching team in a club setting
- Experience mentoring junior or volunteer coaches
- Knowledge of Swim Ireland’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model and Performance Pathway
