Yesterday Swim Ulster celebrated the 40th anniversary of Junior League Swimming in Ulster with a special reception hosted by Minister for Communities, Gordon Lyons MLA, in the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.
The event brought together representatives from clubs across the province, volunteers, sponsors and invited guests to mark four decades of one of Ulster’s most successful grassroots swimming competitions.
What began in 1986 as the Belfast Telegraph Teletots League has grown into today’s Forest Feast AquaSprint Junior Swimming League, with 24 clubs now competing across five divisions each season. Over the past four decades, thousands of young swimmers have taken their first steps into competitive swimming through the league, which continues to provide an enjoyable, inclusive and team-focused introduction to the sport.
The reception included a commemorative group photograph with Minister Lyons, followed by a short address recognising the contribution of clubs, volunteers and partners who have helped the competition flourish over the last 40 years.
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said: “Forty years of the AquaSprint Junior Swimming League is a remarkable milestone and testament to the dedication of Swim Ulster, its clubs, volunteers and supporters.
“AquaSprint has introduced thousands of young people to swimming, fostering not only future elite athletes but also a lifelong appreciation for sport, teamwork and healthy living. Many former AquaSprint participants have gone on to achieve success on the European, World and Olympic stage. Pathways and successes such as these highlight the importance of grassroots sport and the opportunities it creates.
“I am pleased to host this special reception at Parliament Buildings to celebrate this achievement and to recognise the outstanding contribution this competition has made to grassroots sport across Northern Ireland. I wish AquaSprint continued success for many years to come.”
Chief Executive of Swim Ulster, Stephen Cuddy, said:
“Today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate 40 years of Junior League Swimming in Ulster and to recognise everyone who has helped make the AquaSprint League such an enduring success.
We are extremely grateful to Minister Gordon Lyons MLA for hosting today’s reception in the magnificent surroundings of Stormont. It is a fitting way to recognise the tremendous contribution that this competition has made to grassroots swimming across Ulster over the past four decades.
I would also like to sincerely thank our title sponsors, Forest Feast, whose continued support over the past 16 years has helped the AquaSprint League continue to thrive and provide outstanding opportunities for young swimmers.
Most importantly, thank you to our clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers, parents and committee members who make the league happen year after year. Without their dedication and enthusiasm, this competition simply would not exist.
The AquaSprint League is about so much more than winning races. It introduces young swimmers to competition in a fun, supportive and team environment, giving children of all abilities the opportunity to represent their club, contribute to their team’s success and develop confidence in the pool. For many swimmers, it is the first step on a lifelong journey in our sport, and that is something we are incredibly proud of.
As we celebrate 40 years, we also look forward to inspiring the next generation of young swimmers and ensuring the AquaSprint League continues to go from strength to strength for many years to come.”
Deirdre Burns, Forest Feast, said:
“Forest Feast are delighted to have partnered with Swim Ulster as title sponsor of the Forest Feast AquaSprint Junior Swimming League for the past sixteen years. AquaSprint not only brings young people together to be active and compete in a fun, social environment, it also helps identify and inspire some of Ulster’s most promising future sporting talent.
The AquaSprint Junior Swimming League provides an early introduction to competitive swimming, with many of the elite athletes who have gone on to represent Northern Ireland, Ireland or Team GB at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships and Olympic Games beginning their journey as part of an AquaSprint team.
The benefits of taking part in a fun, team-based sport from a young age are immense. AquaSprint helps build confidence, encourages lasting friendships and reinforces the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. We are proud to support a competition that continues to have such a positive impact on young people across Ulster”
Swim Ulster extends its thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of Junior League Swimming over the past 40 years and looks forward to continuing its proud tradition of providing accessible, enjoyable and competitive opportunities for young swimmers across the province.
